The Waupaca area is home to over 600 businesses, with about 20 employing more than 60 people each. The largest, ThyssenKrupp Waupaca, Inc., employs 1,550 in two local plants. Other large employers include the Wisconsin Veterans Home, 803 employees; Waupaca County, 500 employees; the School District of Waupaca, 419 employees, and Riverside Medical Center, 300 employees.

There are 27,600 in the local labor force and the county unemployment rate is under 5 percent.

Business Park

The Waupaca business park is the site of 24 business facilities, including those of Dana Brake Parts, Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co., Add-Inc. and Churny Company, a Kraft Foods company. At present, 206 acres are available for development.

Rail Service

Canadian Northern Railroad provides daily switching service. Distance to the nearest piggyback service is 28 miles.

Motor Carrier

Located at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 10 and State Hwys. 22, 49 and 54, Waupaca is served by two LTL and truck terminals, two interstate carriers and 11 intrastate carriers. We are 24 miles from the nearest interstate highway, I-39, and 40 miles from State Hwy. 41.

Air Service

Waupaca Municipal Airport: 3,900-foot hard surface runway, lighted, Unicom radio, non-directional beacon, charter service. No instrument landing system or VOR. A 5,900-foot runway expansion project is underway.

Municipal Government

Waupaca has a city manager/mayor/city council form of government. There are Tax Incremental Financing (TIF) Districts with comprehensive plans, city and county zoning ordinances. From the beginning of 2001 to mid-2002, the City created eight new TIF districts and amended two of the eight.

The City of Waupaca owns the business park, which has rail access and is undergoing a major expansion. Two hundred six acres are available for development.

E-Commerce

A number of firms offer local Internet access and Internet solutions in Waupaca. Broad band services, including ISDN, TI/DSI, ADSL/SDSL/DSL and cable also are available locally.

Competitive broadband service utilizing 2.4 ghz wireless technology is offered to businesses through a city utility. Waupaca is one of only 24 public sector organizations in the state to offer this service. See: WaupacaOnline.net
